Mahogany is one of the best-known and most appreciated hardwoods in the world, and it earns that reputation honestly. Freshly cut boards start out a salmon or pinkish-brown, then darken over time into a rich, lustrous reddish-brown with a bright, glassy shine — sapwood shifts to a pale yellowish tone by contrast. The grain is usually straight, occasionally interlocked, with a fine and uniform texture that gives it an attractive natural sheen. It's genuinely easy to work by hand or machine, yielding smooth surfaces and crisp edges, and it takes nails, screws, and both natural and synthetic adhesives without complaint. Slicing and rotary-cutting produce decorative veneers of real quality. It's also naturally durable — resistant to rot and warping, moderately resistant to fungal and termite attack, though not to marine borers — which is part of why it's remained in demand across international markets since the 16th century.
